Mike blamed the snowpocalypse of last week. But not entirely. Not when it was all over his track record that he Did Not deal well with the holidays in general, and this one in particular. But at least this year he'd actually made it all the way to Christmas Day before he'd caved in and felt the need to run, run, run as far away as he could get and just lose himself somewhere unfamiliar until New Year's was closer than Christmas.

But there was also a bigger difference, this year.

"Babe, can you find a station that's not playing the same five Christmas songs over and over?"

This year, as Mike's pick-up rolled along the road getting further and further away from Fandom, he wasn't alone.

"Uhhh," Brooke said, reaching to flip through. "We might need to find a Spanish station, where we can't tell it's Christmas songs."

She didn't think this would actually work.

"At least that sounds like a... like a semi-achievable goal," Mike decided, although with a sigh that suggested he also didn't think it would actually work. "I mean, they can't all be playing this shit."

"Have you never listened to the radio on Christmas before?" she checked. "There is always the playlist option."

"Not everyone does this holiday, you know?" Mike replied, a little meekly. "I just think it's, like, a lost opportunity."

[gobrookeyourself]

"It is, and I agree. But some things, at least for now, are inescapable. Unless we want to listen to Songs to Sing In the Car?" Brooke suggested, frowning as she scrolled. "These are... not songs I sing in the car."

"Does it have any eighties rock or early two-thousands rap?" Mike questioned, glancing over. Cracking half a smile, which was... Okay, he'd been trying, back on Fandom, but he hadn't been succeeding much. So even half a smile was kind of a triumph. "If not, they're not the songs I sing in the car, either."

"That is a combination that so won't be together on any playlist," Brooke pointed out. "Those are two very different things."

The things you knew just because your high school bestie was a music snob.

Mike actually laughed. It was quiet, but still. "Whoa, what?" he asked, mock incredulous. "What are you, the playlist police? Anything can go together on a playlist, you just need to put them there."

"But how do you go from one to another? Is there like the occasional Britney hit in between to bridge the gap?" Brooke asked.

"I don't think about that shit when I'm making a list for myself," he said, shaking his head. "It's different if it was like for a show or a routine or something."

"Do you have a list to play?" Because now she wanted to hear what it was like.
