Éponine couldn't help a short, sharp laugh at that; she knew what meaningless flattery sounded like, and this did not sound like it. Perhaps not the most sincere flattery, but it lacked the cynical edge of people only looking to get her on their good side. It was not something she was terribly used to, but she wasn't going to complain.

"Éponine, monsieur, that's my name," she replied with a quick curtsey. "Pleased to make your acquaintance."
