Party!!!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Wednesday Evening

It was Halloween, and after a long four-year break, it finally meant that there was a party at the mansion again. There were Jack O'Lanterns outside lighting the way to the house, and bat cut-outs and balloons in the shape of ghosts and skulls all around the house, and creepy looking candy on the snack table.

And a bloody goblin in the fridge. This time, it had a name tag identifying it as April, because Mike was a sentimental fool.

There were also way too many kind of jello shots. And too many versions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, but at least Mike had made a sign with instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it.

"It was actually pretty brief," he said, with a chuckle. "And I wasn't graphic." That one was a joke, because he didn't think she'd assume he had been. "He seemed okay with it. Said he might keep odd hours at the job, anyway."

Octavia shrugged one shoulder. "I don't think people here are very adaptive," she shared. "They like wearing what they're used to wearing."

Which was... what she also did, yes.

"Well, at least what we're used to wearing is practical, huh?" Zack smiled lopsidedly. "But if other people aren't planning on fighting, I guess all the rest of it is practical enough to them, too."

He shrugged. Civilians were confusing, but he wouldn't hold it against them.

Neither was it one for Octavia, so hey, they had that in common at least! Not that it helped.

Octavia nodded. Then, after a pause for quiet, where she wasn't sure what to say, she said... basically just that: "What is it that I'm supposed to say here? 'Hope you have a good time?'"

It was a weirdly genuine question. Social pleasantries with strangers were not something she had a good handle on.

Octavia cast a glance around the crowd. "Even the costumes?"

That was a joke. Probably.

"I don't even pretend to know what's up with the costumes," Zack admitted with a laugh. "This is just random silly, to me. But for someone it probably makes some kind of sense?"

A beat.

"Maybe."

You could probably tell that Octavia wasn't all that used to smiling by how faint it was.

But, still.

"But I'm still not sure if it was lime," she added, shrugging. "You tell me."

"If you say so," Octavia said, like she wasn't so sure. But also like it wasn't that important. She was learning to let some oddities go. "There are so many holidays in this time."

"Way more than I'm used to," Zack agreed. "We have something kind of like one back home, mostly it's just a lit tree in the center of town during the dark months. But here they're just... constant."

Someone had to be That Couple, and this year it was Steve and Tony's turn. Steve, of course, was the gallant knight to Tony's king, dressed in Cap colors and with a shield that would actually provide protection.

In Fandom, you could never be too careful, right?

That was as good a start as anything for talking to him for the first time since last year's Halloween party, right? That, and looking from him to Tony and back again.

She'd gotten over the urge to add a 'sir' at the end of that, at least. Probably a by-product of learning to call Tony by his first name, too.

She snorted. "You're asking the wrong person on that one," she admitted. "I mostly only come to these things for the free booze."

Well, in this world you could probably make a good argument for it being a costume.

"It was the free food, for me," Octavia admitted, in turn. "Not that things are as good as at some of those events the school has, on that front."

Mike, what was up with all that candy? For shame.

Octavia nodded. "Back where I'm from, we also had just the one." Apparently, there was little to celebrate in space. "But I work at the flower place, and it feels like it's a new one every week."

"It feels a little bit that way at the animal shelter too," Zack sighed. "Everyone just impulse-buys a pet for their girlfriend or their kid or something, and they don't stop to think about how animals grow up and need to be fed and cleaned up after."

Zack kind of hated how many gift-giving holidays there were for exactly that reason.

Karolina was maybe a little taken aback by how obvious the double take was, but more out of not being used to that kind of thing than any sense of being offended by it.

This Morticia look had a push-up thing and cinch-in thing both happening, and it stood to reason that it would've been a shame if no one had taken notice, right?

"Hi," she repeated. "I'm Karolina."
