Party!!!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Wednesday Evening

It was Halloween, and after a long four-year break, it finally meant that there was a party at the mansion again. There were Jack O'Lanterns outside lighting the way to the house, and bat cut-outs and balloons in the shape of ghosts and skulls all around the house, and creepy looking candy on the snack table.

And a bloody goblin in the fridge. This time, it had a name tag identifying it as April, because Mike was a sentimental fool.

There were also way too many kind of jello shots. And too many versions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, but at least Mike had made a sign with instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it.

Zack smiled a little over that in clear approval, yes.

"It's always nice to see someone wearing something functional around here," he decided. "You'd think there'd be more of it, considering."

On the odd occasion when it tried to kill everyone, you'd think more people would have armor in reserve.

Octavia shrugged one shoulder. "I don't think people here are very adaptive," she shared. "They like wearing what they're used to wearing."

Which was... what she also did, yes.

"Well, at least what we're used to wearing is practical, huh?" Zack smiled lopsidedly. "But if other people aren't planning on fighting, I guess all the rest of it is practical enough to them, too."

He shrugged. Civilians were confusing, but he wouldn't hold it against them.

Octavia cast a glance around the crowd. "Even the costumes?"

That was a joke. Probably.

"I don't even pretend to know what's up with the costumes," Zack admitted with a laugh. "This is just random silly, to me. But for someone it probably makes some kind of sense?"

A beat.

"Maybe."

"If you say so," Octavia said, like she wasn't so sure. But also like it wasn't that important. She was learning to let some oddities go. "There are so many holidays in this time."

"Way more than I'm used to," Zack agreed. "We have something kind of like one back home, mostly it's just a lit tree in the center of town during the dark months. But here they're just... constant."

Octavia nodded. "Back where I'm from, we also had just the one." Apparently, there was little to celebrate in space. "But I work at the flower place, and it feels like it's a new one every week."

"It feels a little bit that way at the animal shelter too," Zack sighed. "Everyone just impulse-buys a pet for their girlfriend or their kid or something, and they don't stop to think about how animals grow up and need to be fed and cleaned up after."

Zack kind of hated how many gift-giving holidays there were for exactly that reason.

Octavia wasn't really from somewhere where pets were a feasible idea. But she'd had Helios. So she had Feelings about this.

"That doesn't help me at all with how I already think people should earn the things they throw money at, instead."

"Especially when they're living things," Zack said, shaking his head. "We have an entire coop of chickens that just gets more full every year when Easter happens. They're harder to adopt out than rabbits, and I feel weird about eating them if they used to be someone's pet."

For maybe a month each.

"But chickens lay eggs." Yes, she hadn't known what a panther was until this party, but she had definitely learned about animals that had a more immediate use. "Why don't people want to keep an animal that lays eggs? Are just too lazy?"

'Lazy' was also a concept that seemed more tied to this time period in her mind than it was to where she came from.

"I don't know," Zack sighed. "Maybe they don't have enough space. Or they weren't thinking when they got a cute baby chicken for a child who isn't responsible enough to take care of them yet."

"I feel like I should have more of those shot things just to get through this conversation," Octavia noted, after a beat.

Look, humans were pretty much garbage, sometimes.

"You know, I kind of do too," Zack admitted, glancing around for those with those luminous blue eyes of his. "And I'm not even much of a drinker."

It took a lot to make a SOLDIER drunk.

"Barely counts as drinking, anyway," Octavia replied, nodding towards the table with all the non-drinks and other edible and drinkable things. "I think the stuff in the syringes was a little closer to liquid?"

"Syringes are such a weird way to drink things," Zack noted, eyeing them. Maybe kind of keeping his distance from them.

No reason.

"Must be some other weird part of the holiday."

Octavia just shrugged. "I don't know, it seemed easier than some of the other ones."

She didn't have any trauma associated with them, so she could just enjoy the ability to squirt the shot into your mouth.

"But I think they may just be a random thing. Among a bunch of other random things. There's a lot here that I didn't see when I went to one of these parties last year."

"It's all pretty random," Zack agreed. "I mean, there seems to be a general theme of 'spooky things, probably,' but when you settle in and really pick it all apart, coming from the outside there's no real rhyme or reason to any of it."

He'd be baffled if anyone were to actually explain the origins of the holiday to him.
