Party!!!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Wednesday Evening

It was Halloween, and after a long four-year break, it finally meant that there was a party at the mansion again. There were Jack O'Lanterns outside lighting the way to the house, and bat cut-outs and balloons in the shape of ghosts and skulls all around the house, and creepy looking candy on the snack table.

And a bloody goblin in the fridge. This time, it had a name tag identifying it as April, because Mike was a sentimental fool.

There were also way too many kind of jello shots. And too many versions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, but at least Mike had made a sign with instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it.

"Me," Octavia said. Which worked in her favor here, since people were still mostly going to assume her leathers were one anyway.

Which would've been fun, if she'd cared about that at all. "I don't really do costumes."

"I dig it," Rosa said, after another moment and another appraisal. "I usually don't either, but I already had this in my closet."

Like it was just...every day, casual wear.

But, come on, at the same time. Leather? With gloves? And topical? How could she not?

At that, Octavia took a better look at Rosa's outfit, her head slightly tilted. "It looks good."

From her own use of leather, the chest window was a lot impractical. But it was a good look, from other standpoints. And those ones seemed to be generally more important around here.

"Hard to go wrong with leather, I guess."

"Yeah," Rosa agreed with a shrug. "That's kind of what I figured, too."

Honestly, it would be harder to find an outfit without leather for her.

And probably easier to have a conversation with nearly anyone else. Small talk wasn't exactly a...forte for Rosa, no.

Neither was it one for Octavia, so hey, they had that in common at least! Not that it helped.

Octavia nodded. Then, after a pause for quiet, where she wasn't sure what to say, she said... basically just that: "What is it that I'm supposed to say here? 'Hope you have a good time?'"

It was a weirdly genuine question. Social pleasantries with strangers were not something she had a good handle on.

Because Rosa was a whole lot better.

She snorted. "You're asking the wrong person on that one," she admitted. "I mostly only come to these things for the free booze."

"It was the free food, for me," Octavia admitted, in turn. "Not that things are as good as at some of those events the school has, on that front."

Mike, what was up with all that candy? For shame.

"Free food's a good one, too," Rosa allowed, nodding her approval, maybe even with a faint smirk. "And what that school puts out is nuts. I feel sorry for whoever has to make all that crap."

"I always take away as much of it as I can carry." Or as much of it as fit in her pockets and that would keep reasonably well in a fridge, anyway. "I'd never seen as much food in one place before I came here, and they just do it over and over again."

"Almost makes you wonder where they get it all," Rosa mused. Not that she'd ever actually wondered, but the conversation hadn't sucked so far, so she figured she might at least try to keep it going a little. She considered her fellow leather-clad chatterbox a moment.

"Where were you before you came here?"

And made a mental bet with herself that it probably wasn't anywhere she'd likely heard of. Odds were pretty good on that one around here.

It was a very good guess. Also, kind of right, but really more not?

"We just called it 'the ground'," Octavia replied, with a hint of a dry drawl about her tone. "But the short version is that it's this planet, just one nuclear apocalypse and a hundred and fifty years or so later."

She was yet to figure out just how close they were geographically to where she'd been living before she got yanked to the island, too.

"'The ground?'" Rosa had to quirk a brow at that one, because, let's be fair, it was pretty dumb. "How'd you end up here, then? Another portal gone haywire?"

Though maybe haywire wasn't the right word; wherever she was from, this sounded like a big upgrade.

"'The ground', because we used to be in space before that." Yeah, Octavia's life had been pretty eventful for the couple of years right preceding her arrival in Fandom. "And, I'm still not even sure how I got here," she admitted. "It was like I took a wrong turn in the woods and suddenly everything had changed."

It'd been a pretty disorienting experience.

Space.

Of course it was space.

"How long ago was that?"

"Which part?"

You know what, didn't matter. She was going to answer for both.

"I got yanked here a little over a year ago. And we came down to the ground... I don't know, a little over a year before that."

They hadn't really been keeping calendars while they'd been busy trying to survive.

"You seem to be doing okay for yourself, at least," Rosa offered, to the woman she knew absolutely nothing about except for her clearly great sense of fashion and priorities.

At that, Octavia just shrugged.

"I survive," she said, mild but matter-of-fact, "it's what I do."

Seemed a little dramatic, but okay.

Well...nuclear apocalypse, and everything, so that could kind of get a pass.

"I'll drink to that."

Rosa would kind of drink to anything right now, though.

It was a bit dramatic, but there were things she hadn't mentioned, like the prison stint and the entirety of her first sixteen years.

She raised a jello shot right on back.
