Party!!!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Wednesday Evening

It was Halloween, and after a long four-year break, it finally meant that there was a party at the mansion again. There were Jack O'Lanterns outside lighting the way to the house, and bat cut-outs and balloons in the shape of ghosts and skulls all around the house, and creepy looking candy on the snack table.

And a bloody goblin in the fridge. This time, it had a name tag identifying it as April, because Mike was a sentimental fool.

There were also way too many kind of jello shots. And too many versions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, but at least Mike had made a sign with instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it.

"From a different place," Octavia replied, diplomatically. "Somewhere a lot more ascetic."

She was still debating how much of a headache she wanted to cause for someone new.

Eddie made a face at that. "Well, in that case, try the syringe jello shots."

"Why?"

Not that she was objecting - she was already reaching for one of them. She just didn't follow the connection.

Because now he thought she escaped from a religious cult. Damn it, Octavia.

"Because it looks cool."

At least it was a reasonable assumption to make. And she hadn't even made reference to being 'kom Sky Crew' when she'd introduced herself!

"It's green," she noted, holding the syringe up to the light for a closer look. "I don't know, I guess that counts as cool."

"It totally does," he replied, giving it a suspicious look as well. "Think it's lime flavored? I'm betting lime."

"I don't know if I'll be able to tell." She wasn't all that great at discerning one citrus from another quite yet, although she liked all of them. One of the effects of spending her first seventeen or so years depending on a space station's idea of a garden. "Guess there's only one way to find out."

And that was to stick her tongue out with her chin tilted slightly upwards, and empty the syringe. (And some other person would've done that and made it more suggestive, and another would've made it less so, but this was Octavia and so that kind of imagery wasn't really in her frame of reference, so.) And then to close her mouth and sort of thoughtfully swirl the jello around to figure out if it corresponded to her idea of lime or not.

No, no. Eddie had seen way more suggestive tongue stuff recently.

"Any good at least?" he asked, grabbing one for himself.

"It's sour." Well, a little bit. As much as something with as much sugar could be. "I think I like it."

"See, I was right about that one," Eddie said with a grin.

"I guess."

You could probably tell that Octavia wasn't all that used to smiling by how faint it was.

But, still.

"But I'm still not sure if it was lime," she added, shrugging. "You tell me."

He could be charming, you see. He could do it when not making the absolute worst life choices.

Eddie made a face, taking the shot like someone who was no longer used to these sorts of themed parties. "Okay, that's sorta lime? If you've never seen one before."

"See, that's the thing here, right?" Octavia replied, raising her eyebrows a little. "There are real things that have a taste, and then there are things that are supposed to taste like them. But they... don't."

Welcome to the world of everything being a chemically produced copy of a flavor, O.

"Yeah, it's a thing. It's like," Eddie started before putting the fake syringe down and squaring his shoulders. "There's this candy? That's banana flavored, but from a type of banana that went extinct. But we still got the flavor around because it was made into that candy ages ago."

Octavia's face scrunched up. "What?"

Okay, maybe she was being a little more animated than she might've usually been without the aid of the various bits of jello. Maybe.

"That makes no sense. Why wouldn't they at least try to update the flavor? Or, something else, I don't know. How is it banana flavor if it doesn't even taste like a banana that anyone recognizes?"

Gelatinous courage!

"Because it's traditional or something," Eddie said with a shrug.

"But the banana flavor is a lie." Sure, that was a statement that a person could make, right about now. "That makes no sense."

To be fair, she thought that about a lot of things in this time.

She wasn't... too wrong? Honestly.

"You should read up on GMOs and that stuff," Eddie suggested, totally planning to help this poor, poor, escapee of a weird religious cult.

"Do I even want to know what that is?"

Or would it go the way of 'capitalism', in that it would be rage-inducing?

"You totally do want to know," he replied seriously. Because you probably eat them.

Do human counts as that?

"Humans aren't GMO's. Kinda."

That last part probably sounded weird apropos of nothing. But it left Venom humming thoughtfully in the back of Eddie's brain at least.

Yeah, it did sound weird.

"Okay," she said, in that way that you said 'okay' when someone said something that you couldn't really figure out. So, kinda slow and mildly confused.

"I'll get you some books on it if you want." And maybe some articles at... the newspaper. He was still hoping it would be normal there come Monday.

It wasn't going to be normal there. It just wasn't. Welcome to Fandom.

"Sure," she said, shaking off that mildly weirded-out feelings. Her attention span was a little shorter than usual right now, anyway. "I prefer books to the internet, anyway."

Which was probably another thing that a cult escapee might say.

Which was totally why he offered it.

"Yeah, come by the paper sometime next week."

"The paper?"

Look, she would've known what a newspaper was and where its office was located if they'd actually had one during the year she'd been here.
