Party!!!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Wednesday Evening

It was Halloween, and after a long four-year break, it finally meant that there was a party at the mansion again. There were Jack O'Lanterns outside lighting the way to the house, and bat cut-outs and balloons in the shape of ghosts and skulls all around the house, and creepy looking candy on the snack table.

And a bloody goblin in the fridge. This time, it had a name tag identifying it as April, because Mike was a sentimental fool.

There were also way too many kind of jello shots. And too many versions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, but at least Mike had made a sign with instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it.

"That... actually sounds like it covers the basics," Karolina replied, almost sounding impressed. "The weird can be a really prominent theme."

"Yeah, but that's, like, such a broad term, right?" Beau was scowling slightly, like someone who wasn't happy without specifics. "Or are there that many kinds of possible weirdness that come up around here?"

"There's a lot of different kinds," Karolina confirmed with a nod and a wry little smile. "From... I don't know, weird things raining from the sky, to waking up one morning and finding yourself fundamentally changed for a couple of days."

She always thought she sounded like a crazy person when she said these things, even though she knew they happened.

"Fandom's kind of hard to explain."

"Yeah, I heard a little about that, too. I'd probably just assume you're all out of your minds except I think this place kind of just. Sucked me in? I don't know." Beau rubbed at the back of her head. "Maybe I did just magically get transported to an island of crazy people."

She took a moment to down a jello shot and laughed. "I'm into it, though. Good booze so far, and the view's pretty nice. Y'know."

Sigh, Beauregard.

It was okay, really. Karolina's own brand of disaster meant that she wasn't very good at noticing people hitting on her if they weren't obvious about it. Also, she was starting to realize that it had been a really long time since... God, even since Julie, now.

That didn't mean she was any better at serving it back, though. "Well, I mean... We try." See? Terrible. "With the alcohol and otherwise."

Don't do the eyebrow thing, Beau. It looks ridiculous. Don't -- sigh.

"Good enough reason to stick around, if you ask me. And what the hell are these?" She waved the empty jello shot cup with one hand, pointing at it with the other, looking totally blown away and only part of that was the alcohol. "I mean, besides awesome."

This was going to make gelatinous cube encounters so weird later.

"Oh! Those are jello shots." Which Karolina was not actually very familiar with, or at least hadn't been before this party. Though she'd heard about them before! "Just mostly alcohol and sugar, I guess."

Beau snagged another jello shot -- her third so far, and she was going to . . . well, not regret this in the morning, but she'd definitely be feeling it. "They're like amazing. This whole place is like crazy but in a good way, you know?"

Karolina's smile was a little sheepish, somehow. "Yeah, it is," she said, then chuckled a little. "I mean, I should know: I already left once, but I came back."

Okay, technically she'd already left twice, but it was a long story.

Beau laughed, a little bit disbelieving and a little bit surprised. "That good? Small towns don't usually have that much going for them, but they're usually . . . really boring. And filled with judgey, boring-ass people who aren't real big on theme parties. Not usually worth a return trip."
