Party!!!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Wednesday Evening

It was Halloween, and after a long four-year break, it finally meant that there was a party at the mansion again. There were Jack O'Lanterns outside lighting the way to the house, and bat cut-outs and balloons in the shape of ghosts and skulls all around the house, and creepy looking candy on the snack table.

And a bloody goblin in the fridge. This time, it had a name tag identifying it as April, because Mike was a sentimental fool.

There were also way too many kind of jello shots. And too many versions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, but at least Mike had made a sign with instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it.

"Hey, Zack." Miguel reached up his fist for a bump. "This is the outfit?"

"In black instead of purple, but more or less," Zack agreed, reaching in for that fistbump. "This is my actual uniform. SOLDIER 1st Class black. But all it would really take to change my rank up is this same sort of jumpsuit in a different color."

Miguel nodded in acknowledgement.

"How you doing, anyway?"

"... Is 'undecided' an answer? I might go with 'undecided' as an answer." He paused a moment, and then added, "I-- Iris has been gone since, like, break started."

Which was excessively long, even for her Turk duties.

"Definitely an answer," Miguel said, nodding. He frowned. "Are you worried?"

Zack didn't really want to put words to that one just yet.

But he nodded.

Yeah, he was worried.

"We could call around. Talk to Portalocity, maybe," Miguel suggested. "Or any friends she might have said something to."

"I'm trying to decide how long is long enough that I'm not being that guy who worries too much," Zack confessed, looking at the floor. "But maybe I... I give it another few days, and then I try to get back."

You know. To the 'certain death for Zack' place.

"Wait, back? You think that's where she went?"

Certain death was not a good look!

"It's where she always goes," Zack explained, one shoulder hiking up a little, his head shaking slowly. "Just because I can't go back doesn't mean she's stranded here. She's got a job to do."

Miguel blew out a breath. "If you need to look for her there, maybe we should talk about that disguise first. And you'll need backup."

Certain death. Still not a good look!

"I can't ask anybody to follow me there," Zack said quietly. "If it's half as dangerous as I think it is..."

Yes, Zack. That's why Miguel wanted you to have backup.

"You're not asking," Miguel said stubbornly. "I'm telling you. I kind of like you alive, and I hate assholes experimenting on people on principle. Plus Iris is my friend, too. If she's in trouble and you're putting yourself in trouble to find her, I want in."

"It'll be easier for me than it was before," Zack noted. Not really an argument so much as a quiet observation. "I had somebody else to worry about, before. Now I don't."

Cloud was safe and sound in Konoha, Zack could move freely, without having to stop to fight to protect him.

He looked downward.

"A couple more days," he said, finally. "And then I'll look into portals, see what I'd need in order to get there unnoticed."

"A couple more days, then." Miguel narrowed his eyes at Zack. "If you try going without me, I'm following and kicking your ass, just so you know."

"And I'll have it coming," Zack said, holding up his hands. "I'll call you, I'll call you. SOLDIER's honor."

For all it was worth.

Miguel nodded, satisfied. "So hey, until then, you're not worrying, right?" He nudged Zack toward the tables. "Drinks. Jello shots. Food. Fun. Okay?"

"Drinks, jello shots, food, fun," Zack echoed, smiling crookedly. "That is what I came here for..."

He followed that nudge toward one of the tables, and then looked over the food on offering there.

"... Holiday food is really weird on this planet."

"In fairness, Halloween food is supposed to be weird," Miguel pointed out.

"I'm not going anywhere near the syringe shots," Zack informed him right back.

Couldn't make him. Nope.

Miguel grinned. "Sure thing. There's still jello, though. I think some of them have eyeballs in them."
