Party!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Thursday Evening

It was once more Halloween, and the island had finally calmed the fuck down again.

Well, mostly. The Jack O'Lanterns outside in the yard lighting the way to the house occasionally laughed in a PG-rated creepy fashion, and bat cut-outs flew around the ceiling above the partygoers' heads, and the black cats printed on the sides of balloons flicked their tails back and forth and sometimes hissed at people when they went by.

And because it was tradition, there was a bloody goblin in the fridge, complete with a name tag identifying it as April. Only this time, whenever you opened the door to get something, it'd tell you whatever you were grabbing was actually poison...ously delicious!

(Shut up, it was made of plastic, its punning game wasn't the greatest.)

There were also once more lots of snacks, lots of drinks, and way too many kinds of jello shots. But fewer renditions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, this year! So far, anyway. Mike had a sign up againwith instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it, so that may not last all through the evening.

"Rey and I were trying to figure out what the glow tastes like," Octavia replied, by way of explanation. Not a very good explanation, but it was all she had.

Once she'd dragged him to the tables, she pointed at the shots in question. And, sure enough, they glowed under the blacklight Mike had set up for them. And it made the bottom layer look sort of green, so there was that, too. "Those ones."

". . . Yep, those are in fact glowing." Duke picked one up and held it up. Black light reactive, so not magical or radioactive. He tossed the shot back like a pro, despite not having had a jello shot in many, many years, then tilted his head thoughtfully. "Kind of a tropical fruit punch kind of deal, I think. Not bad."

"'Tropical' sounds like it should taste more orange." No, not the fruit, the color. "Or yellow." There it was.

In her defense, a lot of the actuaölflavors she was faced with around here didn't exist where she was from.

"That is the wonders of food coloring," Duke said. "Things don't always taste how they look. Also, I'm pretty sure the, uh, glow is messing with what the colors look like."

"The glow is the best part, anyway," Octavia decided. Even if she was reaching for one of the tiny PSL ones for herself. Somehow, even with Magnus's hoarding, there were still some left. "But these ones are cute."

And she was willing to admit to a thought like that, right now.

Duke chuckled. "You're going to be really sad when the Perk stops distributing pumpkin spice, aren't you."

"Not as sad as Magnus." And that clearly made her own habit much better. There was another one of those obvious shrugs. "Besides, we don't know yet if they'll still serve me."

"That's true! We should maybe test that, sometime. When we're not being stalked by evil."

Octavia's head tilted a bit. The motion made the small feathers atop her tiny hat flutter a little. "I like it when you say 'we'," she noted, much lighter in her tone than she tended to get.

Then her head righted itself, and the feathers along with it. "And we should," she continued, almost as if that little contemplative interlude hadn't happened at all. "You're probably better than me at telling them why they should let me back in if they don't want to, anyway."

Then she went ahead and downed her tiny pumpkin spice thing. She was, even now, much less messy about the whipped cream part than Magnus had been.

"I have been known to talk my way into and out of some very strange places," Duke agreed. "I'm guessing the whole 'the clowns she was aiming at ended up attacking everyone' thing might work in our favor. Clearly your attack was justified."

"Exactly," Octavia replied, wiping an errant bit of whipped cream from her top lip with the back of her hand. "And I barely nicked their wall, anyway."

"Honestly, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often around here."

"I'm surprised I hadn't already done it." She probably wasn't the only one, either. "And, they should just be glad that I didn't have my sword."

That came complete with both very raised eyebrows and a vague hand gesture. And a defiant upward tilt of her chin that may even have counted as playful, in a pinch.

"They probably already are," Duke said. "Especially if they ever listen to the radio."

And this was a definite face that she pulled.

"Ugh, radio."

"Not a fan?" Duke guessed. "It's kind of growing on me."

It was how he found out some of the details of Rosa's heist, after all. And was how he got to coin the phrase 'drunk squirrels tell no tales'.

"I don't like being spied on," Octavia replied, and you could tell she meant it by the excessive frowning. "No."

"Hey, at least they're open about the spying. Where I'm from, everyone goes around telling tales about you, but the minute you try and find out who and what, they all clam up."

Seriously, Haven had some serious issues with communication.

"At least where I'm from, all we had were actual spies."

Because, yeah, Haven didn't sound better than the spying squirrels when he put it like that.

The squirrels had nothing on Vince and Dave.

"You know, I'm not actually sure that's better. I mean, can actual spies be bribed into silence with rum?"

"Actual spies make sense."

And that was good enough for her! Possibly because of the shots. Look, he was lucky she wasn't telling him you could murder actual spies if you needed to.

"And they usually don't bother telling everyone who you -- talked to at parties, or something."

"Hey, you never know, you could be undercover talking about state secrets. I'm sure they're telling someone who you're talking to at parties."

"We didn't have parties where I'm from."

So, checkmate. Or something.

“Probably because of all the spies,” Duke said. “No one wanted them telling anyone who they were talking to there.”

The laugh that ensued was more of a snicker than anything too loud, but Octavia also made zero effort to hide it in a cough or to tilt her face down.

So you just enjoy that now, Duke.

"Maybe," she allowed. "It gets confusing with too many spies, anyway."
