newroutines | Party!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Thursday Evening

It was once more Halloween, and the island had finally calmed the fuck down again.

Well, mostly. The Jack O'Lanterns outside in the yard lighting the way to the house occasionally laughed in a PG-rated creepy fashion, and bat cut-outs flew around the ceiling above the partygoers' heads, and the black cats printed on the sides of balloons flicked their tails back and forth and sometimes hissed at people when they went by.

And because it was tradition, there was a bloody goblin in the fridge, complete with a name tag identifying it as April. Only this time, whenever you opened the door to get something, it'd tell you whatever you were grabbing was actually poison...ously delicious!

(Shut up, it was made of plastic, its punning game wasn't the greatest.)

There were also once more lots of snacks, lots of drinks, and way too many kinds of jello shots. But fewer renditions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, this year! So far, anyway. Mike had a sign up againwith instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it, so that may not last all through the evening.

Halloween and costumes were dumb, but Rosa was still there. In a costume.

Look, she just already had it and it was lying around, no big deal. Shut up.

Yeah, but at least your boyfriend's costume was mostly red body paint and leather pants?

Miguel grinned. "Like the hair."

"Thanks," said Rosa. "Nice..."

Everything.

Rosa was not subtle, no, but her eyes settled somewhere up near his head.

"...mask," she concluded.

"That's what you're going with?" Miguel rolled his eyes. "Sure, thanks. Jello shot?" He held one out. "I think it's glowing."

"For now," Rosa countered with a smirk before taking up the shot. "And thanks. Do you think it's glowing from anything we need to be worried about?"

It always seemed a little bit like a crapshoot having a party like this on an actual holiday on this island.

Miguel hesitated. "Probably not? I saw other people eating them. Nobody's dead yet. I could do a chemical analysis on it, but Halloween would be over before we got to do them, and it would probably spoil the fun."

Rosa just sort of looked at TIghtpants for a moment, almost like she was really trying hard not to say anything and, with a smirk, realized that would actually be impossible in this case.

"God, you're a nerd," she said, and made very swift work out of that small shot.

"Uh, yeah," Miguel said. "But at least I'm not insisting on the tests." He downed the other, then made a face. "That is...something. I wonder if the eyeball ones taste better?"

"Only one way to find out, right?" asked Rosa.

Who quickly added, "That doesn't involve complicated chemical testing, anyway."

"Chemical testing's more fun." What? When you didn't get drunk, it kind of was. "But sure, we can try all the shots there are."

"I mean," said Rosa, who definitely did not have a problem getting drunk, as long as quantity was part of the equation, "they're there. I almost feel like we'd be bad guests if we didn't."

"When you put it that way, we really would, wouldn't we?"

At some point in the evening, Duke stepped up next to Rosa, a drink in hand. And silently handed her her gun back.

Not commenting on that costume took tremendous self-control. Personally, he felt he deserved a medal.

Was it really that impressive, though? He had literally just handed her a gun, after all.

Rosa took the gun and tucked it away just as silently, not commenting on the lack of costume, not even with a pointed roll of her eyes, which was just as medal-worthy, really.

Look. He didn't realize Halloween costumes were this big of a thing around here, okay?

Not that he likely would have worn one anyway.

He pulled the spare clip she'd loaned him out of his pocket and offered that to her, too. All the bullets he'd fired had been replaced. It was good business in his line of work not to have to owe cops anything, after all.

There was maybe a slight lift of Rosa's eyebrow as she took the clip, but that was as close to commentary as she got before tucking that away as well.

See how much nicer this was? Without talking? Downright pleasant, almost.

Duke would argue that this wasn't nearly as much fun as the dunk tank had been. It was kind of nice how she wasn't looking at him like he smelled funny, though.

He lifted his cup at her, half-salute, half-question. Did she need a refill? You know, while he was handing her things.

Not that pleasant.

Rosa just looked at Duke for a moment, bit back the urge to make some sort of comment about not wanting to owe him anything, shook her head, and turned to move away.

It was a pretty big old spooky mansion, there was no reason they had to actually spare too much space in it.

Duke shrugged. It'd been worth a shot.

He let her go without comment. Apparently the key to interacting with cops really was to refuse to say anything.
