Party!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Thursday Evening

It was once more Halloween, and the island had finally calmed the fuck down again.

Well, mostly. The Jack O'Lanterns outside in the yard lighting the way to the house occasionally laughed in a PG-rated creepy fashion, and bat cut-outs flew around the ceiling above the partygoers' heads, and the black cats printed on the sides of balloons flicked their tails back and forth and sometimes hissed at people when they went by.

And because it was tradition, there was a bloody goblin in the fridge, complete with a name tag identifying it as April. Only this time, whenever you opened the door to get something, it'd tell you whatever you were grabbing was actually poison...ously delicious!

(Shut up, it was made of plastic, its punning game wasn't the greatest.)

There were also once more lots of snacks, lots of drinks, and way too many kinds of jello shots. But fewer renditions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, this year! So far, anyway. Mike had a sign up againwith instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it, so that may not last all through the evening.

And already being accepted, with a "Yes, please."

Octavia had had a fair few shots, yes, but still knew to sip the sake, rather than just knock it back and move on to the next thing.

But she was maybe a little bit more obvious about looking him over than she would often have been. "You look different."

"It's my costume ♥!" said Shunsui, proudly, taking a step back and opening his arms so that she could make the most out of that look. "What do you think? Not so bad, neh ♥?"

Pants were very, very strange, Octavia...

Octavia's head tilted to the side a little more than her usual fraction, looking him over. "It's weird." On him, not in general. "But I think I like it."

She liked his hair like this. She was tipsy enough to think it, but not to say it, apparently.

"What's it a costume of, though?"

"A modern day human out on the town ♥," Shunsui offered, very much wishing he'd thought to add a hat because that seemed to be a great moment to tip one, but he figured not including a hat worked better in it being distinctly different from his usual get-up. "It seemed a bit more interesting than my other option of a sheet with eyeholes cut into it &hearts."

Because, yeah. He definitely thought that one would be pretty good, too.

"Is that the one that's supposed to be a ghost?" Octavia asked, because it wasn't as obvious a reference to someone with her upbringing, but she'd at least picked it up over the past couple of years. "I think I like this better."

"A ghost, yes ♥," Shunsui confirmed with a chuckle, before his grin spread easily, shamelessly. He leaned in a little, lowering his voice just slightly, as if what he was going to say next was clearly that should be kept between just the two of them. "I like this one better, too ♥. It was just be too cruel to wind up hiding a face like this ♥.

"And how are you doing tonight, Octavia-chan ♥?" he added after letting that linger for perhaps just a bit. "Having a good time ♥?"

The way he'd leaned in wasn't all that surprising, but maybe the way Octavia reciprocated a little bit was? Wasn't a big lean, but a lean all the same.

"I am," she said, with a nod. "It's a good party."

Or the beverage table was. Same difference.

"A fantastic party ♥," Shunsui agreed. "Certainly can't beat the company ♥, and that's half the party right there!"

The other half, of course, bieng the beverage table, she was not wrong there.

It was a very well-stocked beverage table, at that.

Octavia brushed her unbraided hair back behind her ear - only to end up having to adjust the headband with the tiny top hat on it. "Even if the company's wondering how anyone wears these things?"

Odds were great that she was going to lose the damned thing before the night was through, just because she wasn't used to wearing anything on her head.

"Well, it looks absolutely darling ♥," Shunsui offered, "if that's any consolation ♥. But if you do need relief from the burden of being too adorable, I'll be happy to take it up for you ♥."

He was going to maybe reach over to help her out a little with the current adjustment, although, truth be told, she was probably managing it just fine on her own.

Octavia was. But she was also a little more inclined to let herself be touched (and outside the cover of darkness, no less) and in fact, leaned into it just the tiniest bit.

"I don't think I've ever been called adorable before," she said, faintly amused. "Maybe I should hold onto it just for that."

"So ka ♥?" asked Shunsui, whose drawl couldn't quite manage to sound truly surprised when he'd expected her to say something like that. "Now that's a shame, Octavia-chan ♥."

And he may have taken just a bit longer to fuss over the hat than necessary, brushing back a bit of her hair while he was there and smiling softly.

"There we are ♥," he said. "All fixed ♥! Not that you'd really need it to complete the effect, Octavia-chan ♥."

Octavia found she missed his hands as soon as they were gone. Still sadly had enough of a handle on herself not to say that out loud, though. At best, it was a little displeased flicker on her face, there one second and gone the next.

"Thank you," she said. "For both." The fixing and the compliment.

"Tondemonai ♥," said Shunsui, beaming into it, though he couldn't help wondering a little about that flicker, brief as it may have been. There might have been a flicker of his own behind his beaming smile, the particular tilt of his head.

"I missed seeing your lovely face at the shop yesterday ♥," he offered lightly. "All set with your groceries this week, were you?"

Whatever small smile had been on her face dimmed, now. "There were clowns," she said, although she was sure he already knew that. "I didn't have time."

For anything that wasn't the hunt, actually, as people who'd had to force her into drinking and eating had found out.

"Ahhhhhh, yes," said Shunsui, whose smile didn't dim so much as it just shifted, almost with a sigh, running a hand now through his own hair. "Those clowns. They did seem to demand an awful lot of attention, didn't they?"

"Took up my whole day," Octavia replied, with a lightness she didn't actually feel. She didn't particularly feel like thinking about yesterday, right now.

Might have explained why her gaze slid to watching his hand, too. "It was a long day."

"All the more reason to enjoy tonight, then, neh ♥?" Shunsui offered encouragingly. "Make it another long one, but in a much, much more enjoyable way ♥..."

It was a little like Octavia snapped back into the present, at that. Found the small smile again, though it was maybe more of a lopsided smirk.

"That's the plan." Along with making sure she'd regret every last one of those jello shots in the morning, but that kind of masochistic streak seemed best kept to herself. "I think I'm pretty well on my way, actually."

"I can see that ♥," said Shunsui with an almost proud sort of chuckle. "Off to an excellent start, and the night is still so young ♥. I almost feel as if I've got some catching up to do ♥."

"There are a lot of jello shots you're probably missing out on," Octavua agreed, with a firm nod.

As far as gestures went, it was actually a lot more obvious than what she usually went for.
