newroutines | Party!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Thursday Evening

It was once more Halloween, and the island had finally calmed the fuck down again.

Well, mostly. The Jack O'Lanterns outside in the yard lighting the way to the house occasionally laughed in a PG-rated creepy fashion, and bat cut-outs flew around the ceiling above the partygoers' heads, and the black cats printed on the sides of balloons flicked their tails back and forth and sometimes hissed at people when they went by.

And because it was tradition, there was a bloody goblin in the fridge, complete with a name tag identifying it as April. Only this time, whenever you opened the door to get something, it'd tell you whatever you were grabbing was actually poison...ously delicious!

(Shut up, it was made of plastic, its punning game wasn't the greatest.)

There were also once more lots of snacks, lots of drinks, and way too many kinds of jello shots. But fewer renditions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, this year! So far, anyway. Mike had a sign up againwith instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it, so that may not last all through the evening.

"You could include leftover candy to sweeten the pot," Magnus said. "Ehh. Get it?"

Duke sighed softly. "Yes. That's very funny. Thank you."

Magnus shamelessly held up a hand to high-five for his super great joke there. Duke, maybe alcohol would help with this.

Duke looked at the hand and sipped his drink.

"Not that funny, dude."

Oh. Oh, no. Magnus was gonna have to break out the sad eyes now. And he had +10 to sad puppy rolls.

". . . God dammit." Duke shut his eyes in the face of that look. "Come on, man."

He was doomed.

"Just gotta return that high-five," he wheedled.

"This is blackmail. You know that, right?" Duke checked, risking a glance out of the corner of one eye. "This is dirty pool."

"Hey, I gotta use what I've got," Magnus replied, offering up his hand again.

Duke gave a final, melodramatic groan and gave in. "Just so you know. This is a forced high-five. That's gotta fuck with your karma."

"Karma schmarma," Magnus dismissed. "It evens out because you're not even in costume."

"You know what? Fine." Duke reached into the box of hats and blindly pulled out the first vaguely baseball-shaped one he could find. And yanked it on.

And regretted all of his choices.

"There. Now I'm in a costume."

"Awww!" He was only half being a dick. The other half we being jealous of that cool hat.

Duke nodded very seriously. "Thanks."
