newroutines | Party!, Purposefully Creepy Mansion, Thursday Evening

It was once more Halloween, and the island had finally calmed the fuck down again.

Well, mostly. The Jack O'Lanterns outside in the yard lighting the way to the house occasionally laughed in a PG-rated creepy fashion, and bat cut-outs flew around the ceiling above the partygoers' heads, and the black cats printed on the sides of balloons flicked their tails back and forth and sometimes hissed at people when they went by.

And because it was tradition, there was a bloody goblin in the fridge, complete with a name tag identifying it as April. Only this time, whenever you opened the door to get something, it'd tell you whatever you were grabbing was actually poison...ously delicious!

(Shut up, it was made of plastic, its punning game wasn't the greatest.)

There were also once more lots of snacks, lots of drinks, and way too many kinds of jello shots. But fewer renditions of Monster Mash on the Spotify playlist for this party, this year! So far, anyway. Mike had a sign up againwith instructions on how to find the playlist and add songs to it, so that may not last all through the evening.

"I don't wish I was still in Haven," Duke said. "But yeah. It would have been nice to be able to, like, phone it in to class yesterday. I had to do a lot of laundry last night, trying to get that clown blood out."

"Same," Rey sighed. "You didn't consider canceling class?"

"Didn't know about them until I was already on my way," Duke said. "Kind of just grabbed an axe and kept going, by then."

"Where'd you get an axe?" She sort of wished she'd had an axe.

...Or remembered to grab her blaster when she'd bolted outside on instinct.

"From my boat." What? Having a random hatchet on hand was important for any sailor! Who was paranoid enough to leave multiple weapons hidden within reach of any given location. "I'm mostly just annoyed I didn't manage to grab a gun too."

"Me, too. Or a working lightsaber."

One day.

"Those things did seem pretty cool," Duke agreed. "Gun gives you better reach, though."

"Depends on how you use the lightsaber," she reasoned.

"Let me guess: Octavia's teaching you how to throw a sword?"

"No. But after yesterday I want to learn," Rey admitted.

She could probably do it with telekinesis already. But she'd also never tried.

"Hell, after yesterday I kind of want to learn."

"Got to see her show off, huh?" Rey asked.

"Couple of times. I barely managed to drag her back to the diner and get some food in her. She . . . really enjoys fighting."

"She's a warrior, it's what she does," Rey said, repeating Octavia's own words. "For as much as I've been able to find out what that means, exactly."

Which was fine. Rey was still figuring out the right questions to ask.

Yeah, Duke was pretty sure there was something deeper and not nice behind that stony deadpan. He was so relieved to see her back to normal earlier at the flower shop.

"It's a little spooky though, right?"

"Which part?" she checked.

"The whole . . . emotionless killing machine thing."

There was a really long pause before Rey said, "I don't know what to call it. She definitely enjoyed it more than I did."

But in a way that was different than Beau, who just seemed to want a good fight. It didn't exactly worry her, but she didn't know how she felt about it, either.

"She enjoyed it more," Duke said. "But you enjoyed it too, huh?"

"Parts of it," she said, thoughtful. "I like a good spar, but I really don't like when I have to kill something, even if it's trying to kill me first."

"I get that," Duke said with feeling. "Honestly? I could have been perfectly happy not knowing what it sounds like when you hit a clown in the head with an axe."

"Exactly. It had to be done, but if I'd had my blaster I wouldn't have had to find out how hard I have to hit something with my staff to kill it."

It didn't feel good! She was light side!

"Left your, uh, blaster at home, huh?"

"I'm new at it, not that used to carrying it," she admitted ~~And the player straight up forgot.~~. "When I knew something was wrong I ran out without it."

"Ah. Suppose that would do it." Duke tilted his head. "Is it just me, or are there an absurd number of people on this island who will run into a fight?"
