'STACHE BASH, Dapper Mansion on Phoenix Way, Friday Evening

It was Friday evening and as had been promised by the posters earlier this week, that meant party time! The mansion was ready, and the mustaches were ready.

No really, there were theme-appropriate balloons.

All that was needed now were some people to have a good time.

"It becomes you, that mustache does," Éponine informed her, completely deadpan. "Perhaps you could make a regular habit of it?"

She did kind of doubt that, though.

"Hmm, maybe for Halloween. Or unless the glue fuses to my face and keeps it there forever," Kitty said. "I see you went the stick route."

"If I'd stuck it on, I'd have an awful creeping tingle down the back of my neck all night," Éponine said, and the face she made might have more effectively conveyed how unpleasant she thought that would be if not for the fact that she was holding the ridiculous fake mustache under her nose right now. "No, thank you. Anyhow, it's funny, this one is. It makes me laugh. Sometimes I'll forget I'm holding it, then see it out of the corner of my eye when I move my arm and think, well, what on earth's that? It's amusing."

"Then you definitely chose the right way to go," Kitty grinned. "I'm pretty sure half of mine will be lost to the floor in about an hour."

"Poor mustache," Éponine said, shaking her head sadly. (This, again, was less effective due to mustache.) "We'll just have to have a drink in its honor when that happens."

Not that she needed the excuse, but why waste a perfectly good one?

"And if I lose the other half?" Kitty asked, though she was pretty sure she knew the answer.

Yeah, now Kitty was going to get the sad, sad, head-shaking look of I thought you knew me.

"Another drink, of course, what d'you think? Two, more like." Éponine paused, tapped the mustache against the side of her face while she thought, and added, "But first, a toast to its good health, so long's that lasts."

Kitty raised her glass. "To my mustache that won't stay on my face."

"But looks good in the meantime," agreed Éponine, and waved her own glass in Kitty's general direction. "We'll remember, after it falls off -- maybe you ought to take a picture?"

Mustache selfies. Totally a thing that needed to happen tonight.

"Yes," Kitty said, getting her phone out. "It needs to be done. Get over here."

Because you were not escaping the mustache selfies, Eponine.

"As if you want that in the picture," Éponine scoffed, but her pleasure at being included -- because it was finally starting to sink in that sometimes people actually meant it -- was enough to outweigh her terrible self-esteem, and she hurried over.

"All right then," she said, and held the mustache up to her face. "Aren't we stylish tonight!"

Kitty held the phone out and gave them both a chance to make sure they both liked how they looked, and then snapped the picture. "Oh, this is gonna confuse people back home."

Well, in Éponine's case it was more like she decided she could resign herself to thinking she looked vaguely tolerable, but it worked.

"You ought to tell them it's real, and you just woke up with it one morning."

"The thing is, home is just weird enough that they wouldn't even blink if I said that," Kitty said.

"That's what I thought, from what you've said." Éponine sounded awfully triumphant about having guessed correctly. "It ought to make their reactions more interesting -- so if you do it I've got to know what they say."

"Logan would probably say it's coming in patchy," Kitty said.

"I'd expect someone would tell you you ought to style it differently, too," Éponine added.

"That'd probably be Emma, just to be snotty," she frowned. "Everyone else would probably just shrug or not notice. I know a lot of furry people, this wouldn't be a huge deal."

"D'you think it could happen here sometime?" Éponine wondered. "We all wake up one morning with mustaches? God knows it wouldn't be the strangest thing we've ever woken up to."

Sure, give the island ideas.

"You're jinxing it, you're jinxing it," Kitty warned.

"I'm only wondering!" Éponine objected. "A place like this, it isn't very reasonable to expect me not to wonder about things like that. Still, you're right. Some thoughts are best kept to oneself. Unless --"

Luckily she shut up at that point, before she could say anything about the island learning to read people's minds.

"Good girl," Kitty said. "Let's talk about how the island should give us kittens and bunnies."

"Like the ones that came out of the balls? I remember you telling me about that," Éponine said. "I wouldn't mind another pet to keep Alouette company around the house when I'm not home, even if it is expensive to keep her fed as it is, and she's only that small!"

She held her hands up to demonstrate the general dimensions of about a medium-sized cat.

"And this is why kids aren't for me."

Also because she would be a terrible parent, and she half-consciously knew it.

"At least pets can't talk back and get sassy," Kitty said with a smile.

"Ha! Don't ever tell them so!" Éponine exclaimed. "Far as they're concerned they can do just that, only it's worse since you can't understand what they're saying."

Wait, this was Fandom.

"Most of us can't, anyhow."
